The Sin of Sloth

Mar 30, 2025    Aaron Walters

This season of Lent, Mosaic has been having a conversation between two invitations: 1) the invitation of love, loving God and loving others, an invitation to live towards Jesus. And, 2) the invitation to live toward self.

To do this we will be dialoging between the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 and the 7 Deadly Sins. Jeff Cook says in his book Seven, "Both the religious and the secular use the talents graciously given by God for boring, ultimately meaningless pursuits without a second thought. We should not picture sloth as the laid-back couch potato. In fact, soul restoring, celebratory rest is a major part of the well lived life. But sloth is more like the Grim Reaper. It is the messenger of death, who, with bony fingers, pokes at the spots in our lives that ought to be thriving and causes them to atrophy."

This week we consider the sin of Sloth and its trappings. I invite you to begin the dialog by meditating on this quote from Jeff Cook, while also considering Matthew 5:6, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice for they will be satisfied." What is the relationship between these two thoughts? How does the Beatitude in Matthew 5:6 speak to the sin of Sloth? I look forward to continuing the conversation with you this Sunday. ~Aaron
